This course is ideal for anyone already working in, or wanting to start working in, the furniture, furnishings or wood machining industry. It’s designed for adults looking to gain a recognised qualification to grow their career or progress onto higher levels.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You’ll build practical skills and knowledge in areas such as:
Design processes in furniture making
Attaching doors, drawers and fittings
Furniture making by hand
Health and safety in furniture making environments
Timber technology
Technical drawings and workshop geometry
Sustainability in the timber trade
You’ll complete a mix of mandatory units and some optional units to suit your workplace or career focus.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
Learning takes place through practical sessions in our fully equipped workshops, guided study and on-the-job learning if you’re employed in the sector. Our hybrid approach helps you balance study with work and life.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You’ll build a portfolio of evidence and be observed by an industry-qualified assessor to show you meet National Occupational Standards.
HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?
If you’re aged 19+ and meet eligibility criteria, you could access this course free of charge through the Adult Education Budget or an Advanced Learner Loan.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
When you finish this qualification, you can:
Progress to a Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship in Furniture Making or Wood Machining

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
No formal qualifications are needed, but you should be working in a relevant role or have access to a suitable work placement to complete practical assessments.
